What is the Vermont Institute of Applied Meteorology?
The Vermont Institute of Applied Meteorology (VIAM) is a powerful way to engage students in high-quality experiential learning opportunities. VIAM also provides valuable weather information to decision-makers in Vermont. Over 100 students have taken part in VIAM projects since it was established in 2006. Through VIAM, our students are engaged in solving real-world problems. VIAM opportunities put students in highly accountable situations where they may be required to conduct research, create their own weather forecasts, and/or communicate with clients.
VIAM Projects
Students have been researching techniques to better predict power outages ahead of wet snow and ice storms. This research is conducted through partnerships with Green Mountain Power and VELCO (Vermont Electric Power Company).
