Mission Location: Hoyt and Last Chance, CO
Description:
CAMA-C deployed on a supercell west of Hoyt, CO. While the storm-scale features were visually impressive, little low-level rotation was observed. The teams observed a nice horse shoe-shaped updraft and clear slot. All three CAM teams undeployed on this storm and moved south in anticipation of deploying on the new target storm west of Last Chance, CO. During our ferry south, a very nice bell-shaped lowering was observed. Just south of Last Chance on hwy 71, CAMA observed a funnel starting to develop with the storm. Both DOW 7 and CAMA deployed together as the funnel worked its way to the ground. The funnel was visible for about seven minutes. A few minutes later, a second tornado was observed. It was visibly wrapped in rain, though CAMA could still make out the funnel location. This tornado lasted for about four minutes. CAMB and CAMC also saw the two tornadoes as they were ferrying to deploy. CAMA continued to collect data with DOW 7 as the updraft and mesocyclone past just north of their location. The rear-flank downdraft was observed at the CAMA deployment location.
As the storm moved ENE over hwy 71, CAMA and CAMB moved farther east to deploy ahead of the hook. CAMA deployed with DOW 5 while CAMB deployed with DOW 7. Despite the presence of a well-defined and intensifying low-level mesocyclone, no other tornadoes were visually observed with the storm. At and after dark, however, multiple funnels were observed near cloud base. They did not appear to make contact with the ground.
HD video and DSLR imagery were collected by all three photogrammetry teams. CAMA has imagery and HD video of the entire evolution of both tornadoes.
