Department Initiatives

The Department of Atmospheric Sciences is involved in several ongoing initiatives. We are spearheading climate change communication in higher education with our Climate Change Science degree and Climate Consensus group. The Vermont Institute of Applied Meteorology (VIAM) engages our students in solving real-world weather forecasting problems. Our own Dr. Jason Shafer currently serves as the Vermont Coordinator of CoCoRaHS, the Community Collaborative Rain, Hail and Snow Network, overseeing a team of over 100 volunteer observers. The Lyndon National Weather Association/American Meteorological Society club hosts the annual Northeastern Storm Conference, the longest-running and largest student-run weather conference in the nation.
